Literacy

by: Dr. Jennifer L. Altieri, Coordinator

The Master of Education in Reading program has experienced a facelift! Beginning Fall 2006, it has become the Master of Education in Literacy Education. Candidates in the revised program have more flexibility with course sequence and take 36 credit hours instead of 45 credit hours to complete the degree. The revised program is more holistic and focuses on all aspects of literacy development. Candidates will also be enrolling in more literacy coursework hours in the new program. They will complete an internship and a course pertaining specifically to helping at-risk readers develop literacy skills. All candidates will successfully complete a program completion portfolio during the internship. Initial certification is required for admission. For more information on the revised program contact the Literacy Division Coordinator, Dr. Jennifer L. Altieri, at jennifer.altieri@citadel.edu.

Faculty members in the Literacy Division have been busy working with teachers in the Lowcountry by offering courses in the schools through both Gear Up and the Wachovia Foundation Grant. The reading clinic was also offered once again this past summer. It offered area children the opportunity to receive help with literacy skills from graduate candidates in the program. For more information on the reading clinic, contact Dr. Dan Ouzts at danny.ouzts@citadel.edu.
