The Hirshey Awards are given in honor of Dr. Charles Hirshey who served as head of the department of education from 1969 to 1979. Dr. Hirshey was pioneer in graduate education in the Lowcountry and a founding member of the College of graduate and Professional Studies (CGPS).
This year's recipients of this award for excellence in education are:
- Mary Ann Benson who graduated with a 4.0 GPA earning a Master of Education in Reading degree; and
- Daniel A. Polasek who graduated with Master of Arts in Teaching in Secondary Education in Social Studies degree.
- Cadet Brion Packett II was selected as this year's recipient of the Colonel Charles E. Hirshey Award for Excellence in undergraduate education. Cadet Packett was selected by the faculty for his outstanding academic record, leadership skills, and teaching potential. He intends to teach social studies in a local school in the fall
