Dean Johnson Highlights School Progress
|
In our inaugural newsletter (Fall 2006), I announced that The Citadel's School of Education is on the march, transforming itself into a Center of Excellence for the preparation of principled educational leaders. As illustrated in the brief columns to follow, that transformation continues and is gaining momentum. A few of these initiatives are highlighted below and more detailed information follows in the articles devoted to each of the School of Education's four divisions and to various activities in the school. Among the initiatives contributing to this transformation are:
- Development of an assessment system for monitoring student progress and for ensuring continuous improvement of our program (see NCATE Update on page 2);
- Successfully implementing LiveText to assist us in compiling, organizing, and analyzing data for program improvement (see LiveText update on page 3);
- Development-in collaboration with College of Charleston-of a Masters of Arts in Teaching degree in middle grades education (see Division of Teacher Education on page 7);
- Pursuing-in collaboration with Schools of Engineering and Science and Mathematics-the establishment of a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Educational Center at The Citadel (see CITSTEM article on page 3);
- Partnering with the Charleston County School District (CCSD) and the Charleston Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce to conceptualize and create a "high tech high school";
- Transforming our GEAR UP and Wachovia projects into a more sustainable partnership with CCSD (see pages 5 and 10);
- Incorporating the Darkness to Light materials and the EEDA mandates into our professional education programs (see pages 7 and 10);
- Partnering with CCSD to offer The Citadel's masters program in educational leadership to a cohort of area teachers with leadership aspirations (see Division of Educational Leadership, page 4); and
- Working cooperatively with the Lowcountry Graduate Center and the College of Charleston in bringing the University of South Carolina's Ph.D in Education Administration to the region (see Division of Educational Leadership on page 4).
Highlighted above are but a few of the good things that are happening in the School of Education. These and related initiatives are discussed more fully in the pages that follow. Also included in subsequent pages are representative examples of student, faculty, and staff accomplishments. I look forward to meeting you soon and-with your help-to continuing the transformation of a good School of Education into a great one.
