Dear Friends of the School of Education:
|
In addition, The Citadel School of Education is committed to partnering with our P-12 colleagues to enhance the quality of education available to all students and to transform schools into genuine learning communities.
Achieving full NCATE and state accreditation has been "job 1" for the School of Education, but there are other significant achievements. Among these is the inaugural cohort of 20+ Citadel educational specialist graduates participating in USC's Ph.D. in Educational Administration now being offered at the Lowcountry Graduate Center. Also deserving of attention is the offering of masters' degrees in school administration and literacy to cohorts of Charleston County School District teachers aspiring to be principals or literacy specialists. As the first step toward our goal of expanding the School of Education footprint in the South Carolina Corps of Cadets, new cadet teacher education programs in biology, chemistry, and modern languages have been approved internally and will soon be submitted to the South Carolina Commission on Higher Education and State Department of Education for final approval.
There are many other initiatives underway including two events that will take place this summer and fall. Beginning this summer, the School of Education's GEAR UP initiative will sponsor the first annual STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) Summer Camp for both area teachers and GEAR UP students from Schroder Middle School and Baptist Hill High School. In the fall (September 30th), the School of Education and The Citadel Athletic Department are sponsoring an "Education Day" at The Citadel/Princeton football game to recognize and honor the contributions of area teachers and administrators.
As suggested above and as described in the articles that follow, the transformation of a good School of Education into a great one is well underway. It has been a very good year for the School of Education and-with your help-our goal of becoming the place in South Carolina and beyond for the preparation of principled educational leaders is becoming a reality. In addition to this newsletter, please visit our website, http://www.citadel.edu/education, to follow our progress. Please contact me at (843) 953-5097 or at tony.johnson@citadel.edu with your suggestions and/or concerns.
Sincerely,
Tony W. Johnson

The Division of Counselor Education continues its vibrancy while exploring the possibility of revamping our existing 48 credit hour CACREP accredited School Counseling programs and adding a Student Affairs specialization. The impetus for changing the current curriculum is to address concerns expressed by current students, program graduates, site supervisors, and faculty. Adding new courses to the curriculum and a student affairs track addresses students' identified weaknesses in the existing curriculum. The Counselor Education Community Advisory Board convened most recently on Wednesday, April 23, 2008 and discussed the feasibility of implementing such changes and improvements.
Dr. Charlotte Murrow Taylor is now a member of the Counselor Education Community Advisory Board. Dr. Taylor served as past state president of the South Carolina Counseling Association (SCCA) from 1987-1988, past regional president of the Southern Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (SACES) 1992-1993, and is a former Citadel adjunct faculty member teaching counselor education courses for 13 years (1980-1993). She is a past recipient of the prestigious national Association for Counselor Education and Supervision (ACES) Counselor Educator of the Year Award. Her professional expertise as a Nationally Certified Counselor, Doctoral Addictions Counselor, and SC Licensed Professional Counselor Supervisor (LPC/S) makes her a welcomed addition to the Board!
The Graduate School Counseling Association (GSCA) took the initiative in fall 2007 to develop the first GSCA Alumni Directory. This directory is accessible on the Counselor Education website at this link. The GSCA Alumni Directory serves as a valuable resource for networking among currently enrolled school counseling students and our professional school counselor alumni. The Directory includes the names of graduates from our programs, their year of graduation, phone number(s), and e-mail address(s). The inaugural Directory includes 50 graduates from 1977 through 2007. As an ongoing project, the Directory will expand as more graduates are identified and as more biographical information is available. The Citadel GSCA is a faculty sponsored, student led organization for school counseling students founded in 1997. GSCA officers for 2007-2008 are: President, Donna Eby-Meeks (until Dec 2007 graduation); VP and then President, Maxine Brown (beginning December 2007 - present); Treasurer, Jocelyn Gauthier; Secretary, Tracey Heath; Membership Coordinator, Jessie Farley; Social Activities Coordinator, Robbie Woods; and Faculty Advisor Dr. Aaron Oberman.
School counseling graduate students Rachael Matthew, Lauren Kurtz, and Laura Wolfe co-presented with Dr. Williams "Legal and Ethical Dilemmas Confronting the Professional Group Counselor" at the 44th Annual SCCA Annual Convention in Myrtle Beach, SC on February 8th. Dr. Williams also chaired a panel presentation of NC and SC counselor educators entitled "Reflecting Upon Counselor Educators' Diverse Career Paths." Over the same weekend, Dr. Oberman and recent graduate Donna Eby-Meeks co-presented "Using Technology in Career Counseling" at the American College Counseling Association (ACCA) Convention in Savannah, GA. On Thursday, February 21st, counselor education faculty and Alice Hambright--the School of Education Technology Specialist--conducted the Fourth Annual Spring School Counselor Supervision Orientation Workshop for Citadel Site Supervisors at the Lowcountry Graduate Center.
The School Counseling Search Committee has been active reviewing applications and scheduling interviews for the tenure-track assistant professor in School Counseling position that is available for 2008-2009. The search process is moving forward and should be finalized soon. LiveText program and unit assessment reports for the Division of Counselor Education for fall 2007 have been analyzed and submitted to the Professional Education Unit. The process for modifying existing survey instruments and meaningful application of survey results continues.

NCATE Update
The Division of Education Leadership (DoEL) has already begun preparing for the next National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) visit scheduled for the spring of 2012. The report for the Educational Leadership Constituent Council (ELCC)--the professional association that establishes national standards for programs in educational leadership--must be rewritten to reflect the new NCATE format and assessments. Candidate and program data must be collected and analyzed to validate that graduates have acquired and demonstrated mastery of ELCC Standard elements. As the first step toward demonstrating compliance with these new professional standards, the DoEL is introducing candidates to a more detailed description of assignments to be assessed and to more specific rubrics and scoring guides that are aligned with new ELCC standard elements.

Earlier this academic year, the Division of Literacy Education mailed our annual letter to all current candidates informing them of their progress in the program. Many candidates--who had stopped taking coursework for one reason or another-received the letter and have called informing us of their intent to begin taking courses again. We are excited to have these candidates back pursuing their degree!
If you know anyone interested in earning a Master of Education in Literacy Education degree, please ask them to contact Dr. Jennifer Altieri at 953-3162 or jennifer.altieri@citadel.edu.
Once again, we are offering The Citadel Summer Reading Program in June. The program runs from June 9-19, 2008, meeting from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday. Children participating in the program receive diagnostic testing and one-on-one tutoring from a graduate student. Parents and teachers must complete the application nominating a child for the program. Please call 953-5097 to request an application form. All parents who submit applications will be informed in April or May if their child has been accepted. Enrollment is limited.
Faculty Kudos:
Dr. Jennifer L. Altieri has been accepted as a program reviewer for the International Reading Association. In addition to a highlighted presentation at the International Reading Association Conference in May 2008, Dr. Altieri has three manuscripts accepted for publication in national journals this semester. Those articles will appear in Reading Horizons, Teaching Children Mathematics, and Teaching Exceptional Children.

Spring has sprung! Everything starts new in the spring semester, and this year LiveText is no exception.
This semester The Citadel's School of Education graduated from the "Classic" version of LiveText to the brand new and improved beta version of the "New Generation" LiveText software.
The "Classic" version of LiveText is an electronic portfolio system designed to help candidates create and share their working and professional portfolios online. It also contains administrative features that allow administrators to collect and share data needed for determining the strengths and weaknesses of educational programs, and to use for accreditation purposes.
The "New Generation" LiveText does all this and more! Here is a listing of a few of the new features:
Stay tuned for more information about LiveText features as they develop! This is the "beta" version of the New Generation LiveText, which means it is still in development and new features are being added almost daily. What an exciting time! Expect bigger, better, greater things to be revealed in the Fall semester! I will keep you posted.

The Citadel Department of Athletics and School of Education have teamed to create "Education Day" to honor Lowcountry educators and administrators as part of The Citadel's September 20, 2008 football game against the Princeton Tigers at Johnson Hagood Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
During halftime The Citadel will recognize the various teachers of the year from Charleston, Dorchester and Berkeley counties, as well as provide a check from Harold's Office Supply to the area school with the most attendees.
At halftime, entertainment will be provided by the Princeton Marching Band which is one of the few "scramble bands" in the country. A scramble band is a marching band with less formality, more satire and humor, and fun for all.
The Athletic Department will provide special opportunities for groups of 15 or more for discounted tickets and a complimentary tailgate lunch. The school with the most representation, based on sales of discounted tickets, will be rewarded with a $500 check from Harold's Office Supply.
"We are happy to work together with our School of Education to help promote our Education Day theme for the Princeton game," said Director of Athletics Les Robinson. "We hope to have a good turnout of Lowcountry educators, students, friends, parents and those associated with their schools for this game."
For additional information on "Education Day" and to register for the discounted tickets and tailgate lunch, please contact Assistant Director of Marketing and Promotions Joni Byars at 843/953-6812 or email joni.byars@citadel.edu.

Donors often ask how they might designate a gift to the School or to one of its divisions. It is the college's policy that any solicitation be conducted only by an authorized Citadel fund-raising organization. The Citadel is fortunate to have two funding raising entities-The Citadel Foundation and The Citadel Brigadier Foundation. Gifts restricted to the School of Education or to one of its divisions should be made through The Citadel Foundation.
Donors who wish to make their gift through the Foundation may use the form mailed during the annual fund drive and, in the appropriate blank, specify the School of Education or one of its divisions for any purpose you prefer. To obtain a copy of the form, please contact the Foundation at (843) 953-5297 or write to them at 171 Moultrie Street, Charleston, SC 29409. If you prefer, you can donate online at http://www.citadel.edu/tcf. You may also donate without the form by simply noting on the check or in an accompanying letter the purpose of the gift payable to The Citadel Foundation. You are welcome to restrict your gift to an area of your choice. You may choose to make a contribution to the School of Education for undesignated or general purposes, leaving it to the discretion of the Dean of the School of Education. Funds are always needed for candidate activities and for our outreach efforts with P-12 Schools. Contributions to the School of Education's scholarship fund or other endowed funds are always welcome. Whatever your choice, please know that your gift is greatly appreciated.
The support we receive from alumni like you is crucial to the success of the School of Education. To assist us in the pursuit of educational excellence, we ask you to consider a gift to the School of Education Dean's Excellence Fund. All gifts are tax deductible. Thank you for your continued support of The Citadel's School of Education.
For more information about giving to The Citadel's School of Education, please contact The Citadel Foundation at (843) 953-3843.
