With apologies to "old blue eyes," it has been a very good year for The Citadel School of Education. I am pleased to announce that the Unit Accreditation Board (UAB) of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) has granted full accreditation to The Citadel programs in professional education. The decision took place at the UAB's April 13-17, 2008 meeting in Dallas. We are pleased with this continuing accreditation decision for it validates that our professional education programs meets or exceed rigorous national standards.
The Division of Counselor Education continues its vibrancy while exploring the possibility of revamping our existing 48 credit hour CACREP accredited School Counseling programs and adding a Student Affairs specialization.
The Division of Education Leadership (DoEL) has already begun preparing for the next National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) visit scheduled for the spring of 2012.
Included this semester are Dr. Kathy Laboard Brown, Dr. Kent Murray, and Dr. Kay Woelfel.Earlier this academic year, the Division of Literacy Education mailed our annual letter to all current candidates informing them of their progress in the program.This semester The Citadel's School of Education graduated from the "Classic" version of LiveText to the brand new and improved beta version of the "New Generation" LiveText software.
Dr. Jennifer Altieri, The Citadel's School of Education's Literacy Division Coordinator, attended the NCATE/AACTE Conference "Accreditation, Accountability, and Quality: An Institutional Orientation and Professional Development Conference" held April 3 - 6, 2008 at the Hyatt Regency in Crystal City, Arlington, Virginia.The Citadel Department of Athletics and School of Education have teamed to create "Education Day" to honor Lowcountry educators and administrators as part of The Citadel's September 20, 2008 football game against the Princeton Tigers at Johnson Hagood Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
Cadets Eva Marie Coleman, Matthew Holt, Jordan Franklin Little, Kenneth Bradley Ross, and Caroline Rudd recently (March 13-17, 2008) attended the International Conference of the Association of Supervision and Curriculum Development (ASCD) in New Orleans, Louisiana.
The Hirshey Awards are presented each spring to both cadet and graduate students exemplifying excellence in education in honor of Dr. Charles Hirshey, the head of the Department of Education from 1969 to 1979. Dr. Hirshey, a pioneer of graduate education in the Lowcountry, was a founding member of what is now The Citadel Graduate College.
Please join us in honoring Dr. Judy Brown Lehr as she transitions to retirement. Both cadets and graduate students know Dr. Lehr well. Over the past nine years she has been a mainstay in The Citadel's professional education programs at both the cadet and graduate levels. Beyond the Lesesne Gate, she is internationally known for her work in Invitational Education and for her participation in the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development.
